HLTH 1250 – Practical Applications Activity #8
HLTH 1250 – Practical Applications Activity #8 – Problem Solving and Decision Making In this exercise, I will present you with three scenarios that will require you to use the general framework I gave to you at the end of today’s lecture. Please use the framework and the headings to answer each scenario, the same way I did in the example of the deli owner. Example Scenario #1 You are a nurse in the operating room and it is late in your shift. You notice that the attending physician, who has been working at that hospital for 20 years, did not take the appropriate steps in suturing up the patient’s wound to ensure that the area is fully sterile. You are tired and hungry, and you have to pick up your kids from daycare. What do you do? Step #1 – What is the problem? – The Physician has not to sutured the patient and there is a risk of infection and risk of blood loss. Step #2 – Understand everyone’s interests – team members in the area or employees – nurses which are me in this scenario -patients and family members Step #3 – List of possible solutions – Call another doctor or nurse who has a specialty in this area and is able to perform suturing and report to them about the physician or the director of care. – Do the suturing yourself – Do nothing and go pick up your kids – Step #4 – Evaluate your options – As a nurse, you can not abandon your duty and you should perform the suturing yourself if you can otherwise call some help and immediately report the physician to the director of care – The nurse is not sure if they should perform suturing and you stay confused. Step #5 – Select an option or options The nurse is able to do the suturing alone and then she reports her finding to the director of care. Step #6 – Document the decision and implement The nurse decides to do the suturing and also reports to the other nurses so that they could report to the director of care Step #7 – Evaluate and monitor After a week that nurse advances to executive positions and oversees dozens of hospitals or clinics and the physician gets asked to resign. Scenario #2 After you finished your career program, you and your partner for the last three years decide to get married. After the excitement of the wedding, you notice that your partner is spending a lot of the money you received as a gift, but you are not sure on what. Upon asking them what they are spending the money on, they quickly tell you not to worry about it and that the money is for both of you. What do you do? Step #1 – What is the problem? The problem is Scenario #3 You are a medical radiation technologist practicing in computed tomography. You are asked to CT scan of a pregnant woman who is currently in the emergency department. The doctor is concerned that she may have a pulmonary embolism and wants to bring her over to your department right away. You know that exposure to radiation is very bad for a developing fetus and that CT scans use a very high dose. The radiologist who is working is not in the hospital and will be reading and diagnosing the study from home. What do you do? please use the steps to complete scenarios 2 and 3. Thank you.
