Traditional Medicine Wheel as a source of Health Empowerment From my readings and the guest speaker’s presentation, I have learnt that the traditional Medicine Wheel is a sacred cultural symbol within the Indigenous community used for holistic balance in life, health, and well-being. The speaker highlighted that the Medicine wheel, which is divided into four quadrants, applies to some first nations and that it has 34 different meanings, such as the four races, parts of humans, elements of nature, seasons, four directions etc., which all represent healing, guidance, and balance. According to Marchand et al. (2020), One could describe the Medicine Wheel as a conceptual model that gives a continuum of time and space, giving each direction a distinct meaning and significance. The Medicine Wheel’s interconnection can be compared to how our body function as a whole, which maintains balance, and when illness strikes, an imbalance occurs. “The Medicine Wheel Framework can be a useful aid in healthcare decision-making and honours First Nations knowledge tradition” (Schroeter et al., 2017, para. 1). Of all the 34 different meanings of the medicine wheel, I would like to highlight the meaning of the four sacred medicines: Sage, Tobacco, Sweetgrass and Cedar, all of which have a symbolic meaning for every season. These medicines are often carried in pouches, and they are sacred, and shouldn’t be touched. Smudging is a traditional practice that is spiritually connected which uses sage or sweetgrass, gifting tobacco, and using sweat lodges, and it cleanses or refreshes the mind, body and soul and brings positive energy and holistic balance (Stanhope et al., 2022). Acknowledging and encouraging traditional practices like smudging is recognizing its value, and giving guidance and support needed for ongoing healing, which is an aspect of providing culturally safe care as a nurse. Even though cultural competence and cultural safety work hand in hand, cultural safety is still highly important for health equality since it outlines the essential practices and methods for putting this strategy into practice in healthcare (Curtis et al., 2019). A safe nurse-client relationship necessitates the nurse to comprehend other people’s beliefs and practices, such as Indigenous peoples’ access to traditional medical practices and ceremonies, engagement in dialogue, and other factors that foster a sense of humility and understanding (Stanhope et al., 2022). So, to effectively care for the diverse background of patients, as nurses, we need to self-assess our values, beliefs and prejudices that differ from others and adjust them to foster holistic healing.
