The association of body mass index (BMI) with mortality in hemodialysis patients has been found to be reversed in comparison with the general population. This study examined whether BMI is an effect measure modifier for the relationship between end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. Hemodialysis patients who were aged 50 to 75 years at the start of follow-up were selected from the Netherlands Cooperative Study on the Adequacy of Dialysis-2 (NECOSAD), a prospective cohort study in incident dialysis patients in the Netherlands, and compared with adults who were aged 50 to 75 years and included in the Hoorn Study, a population-based prospective cohort study in the same country. Data are presented in the table below. Table I ESRD No ESRD Person-years Deaths from CVD Person-years Deaths from CVD Total 1875 165 16321 103 BMI ≥30 233 17 2560 22 <30 1642 148 13761 81 a) What is the crude/unadjusted association for (ESRD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality? Interpret your result.
