Inez is a 47-year-old administrative assistant. Her office has been undergoing major reorganization, including replacing its computer server. This is causing her great stress. Inez spends most of her day sitting at her desk trying to keep up with all of the changes. She feels overwhelmed and is eating a poor diet that consists largely of fast food. Inez has a family history of high blood pressure and diabetes. Inez begins to notice sharp pain and pressure in her chest behind her sternum. The pain is initially fleeting and disappears rapidly with rest; however, over time it becomes a lingering pain. She begins to take the elevator, rather than the stairs, to her second-floor office. Inez notices she grows tired easily and often can’t catch her breath. She assumes this is due to stress at work. Inez is at work when suddenly she experiences sharp, crushing pain in her chest near her sternum. She tells her coworkers that it feels like an elephant is sitting on her chest. The pain radiates down her left arm and into the left side of her neck. Inez is having difficulty breathing and is dizzy. Her coworkers immediately call emergency services. Health care professionals at the hospital confirm Inez is having a myocardial infarction (or heart attack) and are able to stabilize her. Cardiac catheterization and an echocardiogram reveal plaque buildup in her coronary arteries. Fortunately, Inez fully recovers. Inez receives a prescription for an antihyperlipidemic medication (sometimes called a “statin”) and is encouraged to manage her stress levels and make changes to her diet.
