In healthcare settings, the ability to access the patient’s records is important. Implementation of electronic health records (EHR) has been noted to reduce medical errors, improve the accuracy and clarity of medical records, and reduce duplicate testing (Green, 2018). It is vital to be aware of the patient’s medical history and/or their current treatment plans if they have any. The ability to have charting software that allows any doctor access and review is a cherished capability. EHRs may also serve as a platform for decision support. Established clinical guidelines or best medical practices may be operationalized within the EHR software (Atasoy, Greenwood, & McCullough, 2019). When patients present at an office, providers have the ability to review previous visits with other physicians. This allows the current physician to review trends in requests and patterns of the patient. This database also allows providers to see what medication has been prescribed to the patient. Some charting systems have also been interfaced with pharmacies. This feature allows providers to verify when medications were picked up from the pharmacy. This benefit is important to quickly identify drug-seeking patients that travel to different providers to obtain pain medication. Having this technology and database allows providers to access the patient’s history and will allow for a more focused and accurate plan of care. As a nurse leader, I will be responsible for gathering as much of this data prior to the physician’s initial encounter for this day.
