In this Ted Talk by BJ Miller

In this Ted Talk by BJ Miller who is a hospice and palliative medicine physician he talks about a shift in perspective at the end of life. He said that people who go into healthcare go in with good intentions, but the issue is that healthcare was centered around disease, not people. The hospital was not made for death and hospitals are expected to do more than what they are capable of. He said that during his hospital stay after he got electrocuted and had both legs and his hand amputated the nurses were talking about how it was snowing and complaining about driving home in it. The next day one of his nurses brought him a snowball and he was so grateful for just this little thing that made him feel like a human again and made him feel connected to society. He didn’t have any windows in his room, but this nurse made his day by doing a small act of kindness that he still remembers to this day. He said that in that moment he cared more about the snowball than he did about his own life and living. For most people that are dying they wish to simply feel comfort, respect, love, and a since of calmness. What do you think that hospitals could do to help the families and honor the person that has passed rather than act like they were never there? As a doctor or nurse what are some small acts of kindness to help a person feel human and not like they are just part of the system? How would you look at life differently if you were in Miller’s position, would you take less for granted? https://blackboard.utdl.edu/courses/1/PHIL3370902202240/db/_7656019_1/BJ%20Miller_%20What%20really%20matters%20at%20the%20end%20of%20life%20_%20TED%20Talk.webarchive SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE NURSING PHL 250
