In this Ted Talk, Helen O’shaughnessey explains

In this Ted Talk, Helen O’shaughnessey explains her beliefs upon death. She states that everyone has a right to life and death and with 6 months to live or being terminally ill, people should have the right to die with dignity. As a nurse herself, Helen has seen a lot of death and it allowed her to form a group called “Death with Dignity” to campaign for a pending bill that fell off the table in 2015 because of government change. This bill allowed for physician-assisted death. Helen remains passionate about this law because in Oregon a model was created that allows for patients to ingest medicine to end their lives when they wish. As explained in the video, it was tightly controlled with no slippery slope, no coercion and was patient initiated. It immediately showed positive results and improvement in openness about life and death in Oregon. It since has moved to 6 other US states and other countries such as the Netherlands. Helen explains her fear for the slippery slope being extending the month range for the end of life or extending the right to old people just because they are aging. Do you think this slope will start to appear as laws are passed in more states and countries? Helen ultimately believes that the greatest human freedom is to live and die according to one’s own desires and beliefs. Is this something you can agree with her on? Why or why not? Do you think the right to death should be allowed? What kind of extreme circumstances do you think need to be presented in order to take your own life? How would you feel if this model was presented in Ohio? Has this Ted Talk changed your overall perspective on life and death? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGUwknP0xkA SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE NURSING PHL 250
