Students with moderate to severe disabilities have significant difficulties communicating their wants and needs. Students may have receptive and/or expressive communication barriers that can lead to the expression of frustration behaviors in the classroom and in the community. Special education teachers must understand how each individual student communicates and how their limitations will affect their performance in the classroom and in daily living activities. As the special education teacher, design a (12-15) slide digital presentation for paraprofessionals and support staff describing the effects of communication disorders for students with moderate to severe disabilities. Include each of the following: Explanation of the academic and social effects of communication disorders for students with moderate to severe disabilities, including both receptive and expressive communication barriers. Examples of how the paraprofessional/support staff can provide instructional support for a student experiencing a deficit in both receptive and expressive communication. Include a description of how these deficits may affect students’ literacy skills. Examples of how paraprofessional/support staff will ensure that all students are flourishing and that they are protecting the dignity of the student when providing services. Describe best practices for teams to effectively work together to meet the needs of students with moderate to severe disabilities and communication needs. Address shared vision, shared responsibility, role release, natural contexts (when and how to intervene), consistency of interventions, and time for planning and reflection. At least one accommodation, to use during the presentation, for paraprofessionals or support staff who may struggle with language themselves. This accommodation should involve an additional technology tool or technique that supports learning during the presentation but also models how it can be used with students. Include a title slide, reference slide, and presenter’s notes. Speaking notes
