Kaz is twelve months old. He was born at 32
Kaz is twelve months old. He was born at 32 weeks and spent the first two months of his life in an incubator in the ICU of the local hospital. He was moved to an open ward and first came home when he was two and a half months old. His parents have four other children, all under the age of nine. They are very demanding of their parents’ attention. When Kaz was six months old his parents were told that he had a rare genetic condition. This meant that he was probably blind, he had cerebral palsy affecting all four limbs and that he was likely to have significant learning difficulties. Since leaving hospital, Kaz has had to attend at least three clinics every month. Some of these have been at a regional hospital several miles from the family home. The family has yet to be visited at home by any specialist professionals other than a special health visitor. His parents are very caring and want to do the best for their son but have no experience of raising a child with such complex needs. They make sure that he is clean and well fed. They try to cuddle him a lot but find this hard as he does not respond positively to their efforts. He spends most of his time lying in his cot, or in his pram. He has some toys, but these are not within his reach. His brothers and sisters find it difficult to play with him because they do not understand his disabilities. From the earlier list of challenges to the development of communication choose TWO that you think may be applicable to Kaz.
