Kaz is twelve months old. He was born at 32 weeks and spent the first two months of his life in an incubator in the ICU of the local hospital. He was moved to an open ward and first came home when he was two and a half months old. His parents have four other children, all under the age of nine. They are very demanding of their parents’ attention. When Kaz was six months old his parents were told that he had a rare genetic condition. This meant that he was probably blind, he had cerebral palsy affecting all four limbs and that he was likely to have significant learning difficulties. Since leaving hospital, Kaz has had to attend at least three clinics every month. Some of these have been at a regional hospital several miles from the family home. His parents are very caring and want to do the best for their son but have no experience of raising a child with such complex needs. They make sure that he is clean and well fed.
