Matthew is a 20-year-old university student living

Matthew is a 20-year-old university student living at home. After his diagnosis of leukemia his initial chemotherapy led to remission, but he eventually relapsed and subsequently experienced a massive cardiac arrest and “aggressive tissue invasion” that included lesions on his arm. These lesions were initially resistant to treatment, but a new antifungal medication was eventually tried with good results. As his condition continued to deteriorate, Matthew decided to institute a ‘Do Not Resuscitate’ request, and the recommended action at that time was that he be discharged home on this new anti-fungal medication. The new medication was not covered under public insurance. Since its cost ($2,000/week) was not something Matthew’s family could afford, the family applied to the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MoHLTC) to cover the cost. MoHLTC rejected the request stating there was a “lack of published research” to prove its efficacy. Matthew wanted to go home, but denial of funding meant that if he went home, he would only be able to access the funded medications that had proven ineffective. If he opted to stay in hospital, he could continue to receive the new medication.
