Most Americans prefer to die at home, with their loved ones. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Most elderly Americans die at a hospital or nursing homes. Living in a state with higher home and community-based services was associated with lower risk of end-of-life nursing home relocation, especially Medicaid patients. States who can give more to community-based services increase the chance of dying at home. State spending plays a role. Individual’s circumstances also play a role in where they die. For example, their health, family, social and economic factors may largely determine where they die (Ward, 2018). Nurses play a huge role in patients’ end of life care. The dying process can be lonely and painful. When all other tasks are done, vitals, sponge baths, medications given, nurses are there with or without the families to hold that patient’s hand.
