Scenario As a support worker, you are assisting Oliver Bouquet, a 19-year-old individual diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Oliver has successfully completed a Certificate II in IT and is presently employed as a data entry clerk. He encounters difficulties in maintaining consistent eye contact and faces challenges in social interactions with his colleagues. Often, he chooses to skip company morning tea events due to discomfort in mingling with co-workers. His supervisor, Bill, has made efforts to encourage Oliver to take his lunch breaks in the staff lounge, but Oliver remains hesitant. ROLE PLAY 1 : Identify opportunities and strategies As Oliver’s support worker, your role is to collaborate with him to identify ways to participate in social conversations with his colleagues and identify opportunities for him to participate in work social activities. Arrange an informal meeting with Oliver at his home to discuss ways for him to meet his goals. Include a few suggestions to the employer. ROLE PLAY 2 : Gather feedback and monitor Scenario It has been one week since you met with Oliver. During your meeting, developed strategies to encourage him to attend the weekly company morning tea event and to attempt a conversation with a colleague. You also instructed him to set his alarm to remind himself he can take a break from conversing with colleagues. ROLE PLAY 3 Consult in private with your (SW) supervisor: any limitations in addressing Oliver’s issues and seek advice regarding issues outside the scope of your own job role or ability monitor the success of strategies to address barriers in consultation with the person and supervisor After your conversation with Oliver, report on any gaps he experienced using his smartphone. complete the progress note to document your report. Ensure that your progress note: is accurate and objective uses clear terminology and language complete, maintain and store the document according to workplace policy and procedure.
