A qualitative study among breast cancer patients on chemotherapy: experiences and side-effects. The study used an informal interview process that was divided into six groups, fear of chemo, zero knowledge of chemotherapy, patients knowledge of alternative therapy, symptom management, staying healthy post chemotherapy, and concerns of patients after chemotherapy. The purposive sampling method was used to identify patients that met the criteria of the study. The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences and side-effects of breast cancer patients treated with chemotherapy in Malaysia by interviewing three groups of woman 20 to 30 minutes for each subject. 36 patients, aged from 34 to 71 years, who had completed chemotherapy agreed to being interviewed by a method of purposive sampling which used a constant comparative method and thematic analysis were used to analyze the interviews. This method identified, analyzed and interpreted patterns of meaning by its use of themes within qualitative data. Three ethnic groups of woman were interviewed, Malay, Chinese and Indian. These participants were purposefully chosen to reflect the Malaysian patient population. These woman completed their chemotherapy and volunteered for the qualitative research study. The data was transcribed and analyzed using the constant comparative method with thematic analysis, themes. NVivo 11 software program was used to analyze the transcribed data. NVivo 11 software program was developed by QRS, a software program used for qualitative and mixed-methods research. Initialization phase, construction phase, rectification phase, and finalization phase are the four phases used to analyze the interviews. The first phase, initializing , involves reading the entire interview, understanding the information given then coding the information. The second phase, construction phase, involves organizing the codes and labeling the codes relevant to the research. The third phase, rectification, evaluating the answers and themes that they answer the needs of the research. The final phase, finalization, involves focuses on each theme and the data developed from the interview. Analyzing the data of each theme, making sure it covers the needs of the research completely. The researchers will have a discussion at the end and agree on all codes, data and themes to be relevant to the study. The qualitative interviewing research found that patients will do better if they understand the process of their chemotherapy plan, understand the side effects of the medication and understand how they will feel post chemotherapy. The study also found that having the patients receive education from the pharmacists regarding side effects will increase the patients knowledge of the medication. The patient having increased knowledge of the medication and side effects will benefit the patients recovery after each cycle. This study will have an effect on the nursing care plan, the pharmacist relationship with the patient and the providers relationship with the patient. The patient will have better knowledge of their treatment plan and side effects of the medication with the pharmacists involvement. The primary nurse will have support in the care of the patient with each cycle if the provider and pharmacists have already given the patient education. This creates a team, provider, pharmacist, and nurse, to care for the patient which is a better outcome for the patient, noted by the qualitative research.
