Hospital compare is a great tool that allows the comparison of many hospitals that are certified through Medicare. According to Medicare.gov, this tool combines 8 other provider compare sites and offers many sources and information on each of the hospitals (Medicare.gov., n.d.). “The centers for Medicare and Medicaid and the nations’ hospitals work collaboratively to publicly report hospital quality performance information” (CMS.gov., 2022). Information is collected from many hospitals and then this data gets put into the Certification and Survey Provider Enhanced Reporting (CASPER) (Medicare.gov., n.d.). This data shows all types of information and allows the user to compare different hospitals so they can choose the one that suits them the best (Medicare.gov., n.d.) I have only worked at Advocate Christ Medical Center, but I do plan on transitioning over to Silver Cross someday. Regarding the status of both hospitals, they’re both very reputable and well-established organizations in the community. They are both large hospitals and established as Magnet hospitals for nursing excellence. It did come as a surprise to see that Christ hospital received a 3-star HCAHPS rating. I do believe that this may be from the large number of patients seen a day and the longer wait times. I did have personal experience waiting several hours in the emergency department, but I did find it interesting that only 2% of the patients in the ED left before being seen. I currently work on a cardiac intensive care unit at Christ hospital, and I deal with many post-operative coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) patients. I feel that we as a unit do some remarkable job at stabilizing and treating these patients and was not surprised to read how low of a death rate the hospital has. I also decided to look at this statistic because many of the cardiac surgeons who work at Christ, also work at Silver Cross and I feel that is the reason the numbers were quite similar. The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers (HCAHP) and systems is a national survey that allows patients to share their experience they had during a hospital visit. This information is then shared publicly and allows people to view the ratings of certain hospitals (CMS, 2022). This not only allows people to view hospital satisfaction reviews, but it can show hospitals what they need to improve on regarding patient satisfaction. After watching the Ted talk, it discusses this concept and how it affects patients. Fred Lee explains that patients want caregivers to “meet the emotional needs” of the patients. This allows the patient to feel that the provider is connecting and feeling what the patient is going through. This is very important and having dealt with my own personal health issues, I felt that it made a big impact on my satisfaction when I felt that the I was being listened to and they understood what I was going through. He also explains how satisfaction and the experience patients receive shapes patient outlook. The experience is how they felt during the visit and what the care team did to shape the patients experience. While satisfaction is how the patent feels after the visit and how satisfied they are.
