The two hospitals I chose to compare are Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington and Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin which are both acute care hospitals. Good Shepherd has an overall rating of five stars and a patient survey of three stars. 1,389 surveys were completed for Good Shepherd Hospital with a response rate of 30%. Presence Saint Joseph has an overall rating of two stars and a patient survey rating of three stars. 322 surveys were completed for Presence Saint Joseph with a response rate of 18%. After examining the Hospitalizations and Deaths categories I found that Good Shepherd had lower death rates than Presence Saint Joseph in all categories including COPD, heart attack, heart failure, and stroke patients. However, it is important to note that the number of patients included in each category per hospital differed quite a bit. Good Shepherd had a larger number of included patients in all categories. The HCAHPS was designed to get the perspective of the patients on their hospital stay experiences as well as the communication and relaying of information from healthcare providers (CMS, 2022). After watching Fred Lee’s video, I was made more aware of the difference between patient experience and patient satisfaction. When I think of those two topics, I think of them being intertwined, but rarely do I think of them differently. A patient can be satisfied with the care they are receiving, however, the manner in which they are receiving their care can impact their experience in a positive or negative way.
