Read more about the centre by accessing the link below: Sparkling Stars Early Years Learning Centre (username: newusername password: newpassword) As an early childhood educator, part of your job will be to care for children, address families’ concerns and queries, and cooperate with other educators at the centre. Your job involves working closely with diverse people, children, their families, and colleagues from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The centre has started to experience an increase of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) people and has started to promote the importance of learning to work with diversity and inclusiveness in mind. The centre has included more diverse resources such as multilanguage books and learning videos in different languages and from different cultures. *** Today, you are taking care of three children. Samantha, a girl that has started experiencing hearing issues despite the care of her wealthy family; Walter, son of a migrant nurse and a housewife from Japan; and Jim, or Jiemba, a child from the Wiradjuri ancestry. The three children have never met each other before, nor have they met someone who came from a different culture, race, or social standing as they are. Another educator, Sebastian, will be working with you in caring for the children. This case study includes different scenarios where you will be working with children, families, and co-workers of diverse cultures and backgrounds. This case study aims to apply the skills you learned to work respectfully with people from diverse social and cultural groups and situations, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. You are to demonstrate in these scenarios your ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and situations and how you can promote understanding across diverse groups. For the purpose of this assessment, this case study is based on your state/territory. Scenario 1 – Walter SCENARIO You are helping another educator set up the room for the children’s nap time when you feel someone tapping your back. Walter, the son of the Japanese immigrants, approaches you requesting your assistance. You notice in the other activities that he has been quiet. When asked what the issue was, Walter pointed at his bed and mumbled in Japanese. He is attempting to tell you that he cannot sleep with his soft toy, but there is still a communication gap between the two of you. He would also like to read a book from the library after nap time. An instruction was given to you by Walter’s parents that an interpreter’s assistance is required should they want to communicate something with him. His parent has mentioned that Walter is not fluent or familiar with the English language and would need assistance should one or the other need to communicate. They stated that Walter is comfortable with any interpreter or translator so long as they can understand him. The centre has in its employment Adrian Hill who can speak Japanese fluently, but with limited knowledge in written Japanese. One of the other educators that can assist you in the centre is a licensed translator Hiro Sato. The centre’s procedures detail you to work with the available interpreter or anyone who has the fluency for the language to assist others efficiently. Should one not be present, the next step is to call the centre’s affiliate company to hire a specific translator or interpreter for the duration that they are needed. The objective of this scenario is to understand Walter’s concerns and provide him with adequate understanding, reassurance, and assistance. Roleplay Activity Steps to take: Get three volunteers to act as: Walter Must be fluent in speaking and writing Japanese Sparkling Stars staff member Must be fluent in speaking Japanese. Before the role-play activity, discuss and review the scenario provided above with your volunteers before starting so you can prepare for the activity. In this role-play activity, your goal is to address the concerns below: Walter is used to sleeping with his family with him, and whenever he has to sleep on his own, he needs his soft toy to be able to sleep. Seeking the assistance of a translator is required. Review the Observation Form CS 1.1. You are helping the other educators organise the area when you hear Sebastian make another offensive remark about a minority group. Working with him all day, you have heard him making quiet, snide remarks about the diverse people you and he interacted with today. The Sparkling Stars Early Years Learning Centre has a strict policy against this type of behaviour and, as company procedure states, if the person continues to be a problem, an e-mail to the supervisor is to be sent by the witness. An investigation will then be conducted, and disciplinary action will follow after reviewing the evidence as appropriate. 1.
