The referral includes a note explaining that your patient has recently returned from a “survivalist canoeing/camping trip” in Algonquin Provincial Park. The note goes on to explain that on the last day of his 3-week trip, the patient slipped on some rocks, striking his head, and received a deep laceration to his right hand. He explains that since he had no first-aid kit, he tore a piece of the t-shirt he was wearing at the time and wrapped his hand until he could complete his trip at the end of the week and have it examined upon returning to the city. The patient then visited his primary care provider who removed the dirty, blood-soaked t-shirt dressing, washed the wound with saline and applied a fresh gauze dressing. Upon the completion of his health assessment, the patient was immediately directed to visit the nearest hospital emergency department for further evaluation and treatment.
