The likely cause is a stomach bug that is going around, but numerous kids on a daily basis have been in the nurse’s office getting sick. One case in particular, a teenage girl was violently vomiting for three hours about every 5 minutes or so. When the parents were contacted, it was discovered they were out of state and an older sibling who was left in charge, was unavailable to retrieve the student and bring her for care. This child continued to suffer and was dehydrating quickly during the hours she was waiting to be picked up and taken to the hospital. A simple IV bag and some nausea medications could have made a world of difference. In a hospital, this would be an easy solution, but since we do not have a doctor or an Advanced Practice Nurse in the building, who would be able to prescribe medicine and create an order, this child continued to deteriorate. The next available option, is to call an ambulance and get the child to a medical professional with the power to provide the proper aid to such an uncomplicated situation.
