REPLY TO A DISCUSSION BOARD Research What interpersonal and business midwifery practices are creating, reducing, or eliminating barriers to reproductive healthcare for TGD people? Research Design This qualitative study will utilize interviews to gather descriptive data. A phenominological approach will be used to collect the lived experiences of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals seeking reproductive healthcare with midwives. The interviewer will conduct private interviews with a series of open-ended questions asking about both positive and negative experiences with specific probes into the various types of barriers. The secondary part of data collection will be to interview midwives who serve the TGD population. Their interview questions will be directed at what they do to reduce or eliminate barriers to this population. Again, both positive and negative experiences will be requested and probes into the different types of barriers will be used. Participants will be recruited through midwifery organizations and transgender support and advocacy groups with a goal of having a variety of perspectives. If possible, midwives will also be selected at the recommendation of TGD clients to ensure that conditions considered supportive and helpful by midwives are confirmed by clients. Participant confidentiality will be maintained throughout. Because of the time needed to conduct and process interviews, the sample size will be small. Interviews will continue until redundancy of data is achieved. Interviews will be recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify common experiences between participants. Once the primary analysis is complete 2 external experts will review the findings for accuracy, one person experienced in qualitative research and one person experienced with TGD healthcare.
