Reply to these two discussions 1-There are nine provisions of the Code of Ethics, and it is important to utilize these in times of despair. I would remind Becky of provision number five which states that the nurse owes the same duties to herself as to others, including the responsibility to promote health and safety, preserve wholeness of character and integrity, maintain competence, and continue personal and professional growth (American Nursing Association, 2015). This is a tough time, but it is also a part of nursing. Becky needs to care for herself in this situation as much as she is caring for Joel and Joel’s family. It is important for her to take breaks and reflect on her own feelings prior to providing care for Joel during his passing. Becky is providing provision number nine to Joel’s family during the time of his passing which states that the profession of nursing, collectively through its professional organizations, must articulate nursing values, maintain the integrity of the profession, and integrate principles of social justice into nursing and health policy (American Nursing Association, 2015). Even though this is a hard time for Becky, she needs to keep in mind how difficult of a time this is for Joel’s parents. She needs to maintain her integrity and uphold her duties as a nurse to provide the best care possible to Joel and Joel’s family. 2-The impact of a child’s death extends to the entire inpatient and outpatient medical team that cared for that patient and family throughout their illness. Although each clinician experiences death through his or her own belief system and experiences, honoring the patient’s death is important (Linebarger, 2022). It will be important to conduct a debriefing session with Becky after the patient’s death. Debriefing sessions allows nurses to express their emotions about the loss, as well as recap important details that led up to the event. Afterwards it is important that Becky takes the time to grieve this loss. When Becky gets home, it will be important for her to process this loss and cope in a manner that is appropriate for herself. Becky should grieve openly and within her own way, whether that is taking time away from work, spending time with family and friends, meeting with a bereavement counselor or attending group counseling. Grief is a complex process and will manifest itself in various ways in different people. The nurse manager should remind Becky that expressing her emotions openly is important and should be encouraged (Linebarger, 2022). Open expressions of grief, however, should be kept away from the view of other patients. SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE NURSING NURSING 3015
