Reply to this post, giving the advantages of nursing informatics In my current practice, I work in the home care setting. I am a Clinical Nursing Supervisor to 25 children up to adults. I see them once a month and I supervise the nurses that are in the home daily. I make a new plan of care every 60 days for them. We use a software called My Unity. It has a full body assessment plus if the patient has a tracheostomy and/or G-Tube, J/G-Tube, or Peg Tube. We record the last day they were changed and what the skin around them looks like. The only thing that I have a problem with our program is that it was written by non-medical personnel. They don’t know what we are looking for and they did not ask for our opinion. That is one problem with a lot of the programs out there. No one asks the people who must use the program and are in the field. We are the ones doing the work and know what we need to have and where it should go. One of the best software I have used so far has got to be Epic. I used it when I was a floor nurse in the hospital. At first, I did not like it because there was too much to learn, but when we got the hang of it, it was the best. I like the way it can show if the patient has been to any other hospitals and has had any other tests done. The doctors can look at the results from the other location the patient had the test done. It is almost like having a consultation. Everything is put in a MyChart for the patient so they can see all upcoming appointments and all past appointments. When everything is so neatly combined into one software why would you want to look anywhere else? When in the hospital having Epic helps with “patient flow so we can actually see if the patient changes floors or is discharged” (Epic Systems Corporation, 2022, p. 11). Sometimes I wish that there could just be one system that everyone uses, and it should be universal. This way it would not matter whom we work for in the medical field we could be able to communicate with all the doctors and get orders a lot easier than we do now. Trying to chase down orders is a big issue in my job, so we can put the orders in the computer so our nurses can follow the orders. SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE NURSING NURSING 537
