The teaching plan that was implemented for my chosen family was education on the effects of widespread mold in the home’s basement from a flood on their health. Patient education is defined as planned, interactive, educational activities, usually designed by the healthcare team, but carried out in partnership with the patient and the patient’s family’, that use teaching, counselling, and behavior modification techniques to improve knowledge and health behaviors (Lee, 2017). My education was specifically focused on mold and its risks for causing acute asthma exacerbations. Respiratory illness can be associated with exposure to molds that develop in dampness (Andersson, 2020). The family was receptive to my teaching of limiting time in the basement where the mold was located. They understood that mold particles in the air could cause an acute asthma exacerbation and to always have their inhalers on them. A positive result was they moved their laundry room from the basement to a spear room upstairs to avoid exposure to the mold. They reported since they moved the washer and dryer to upstairs, they have not had any coughing incidents or needed their inhaler while doing laundry. The community service company I contacted for the family conducted a full inspection of the home for further mold. They thankfully found no evidence of mold anywhere else in the house. What did not go according to the plan was the second company I provided them “PuroClean Rhode Island” could not give them a restoration estimate until the second week of January. This large gap of time can increase the likelihood of the mold growing since the basement still hasn’t been completely eradicated of wet spots. In the future, I would gather more resources to contact for the family to restore and remove mold in their basement. I would further recommend or ensure the family sees a pulmonologist regularly to ensure their asthma is being treated appropriately. Asthma specialists have higher adherence to asthma guidelines and better patient outcomes (Cloutier, 2020). SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE NURSING NURS 2011
