My education was specifically focused on mold and its risks for causing acute asthma exacerbations. The family was receptive to my teaching of limiting time in the basement where the mold was located. They understood that mold particles in the air could cause an acute asthma exacerbation and to always have their inhalers on them. A positive result was they moved their laundry room from the basement to a spear room upstairs to avoid exposure to the mold. They reported since they moved the washer and dryer to upstairs, they have not had any coughing incidents or needed their inhaler while doing laundry. The community service company I contacted for the family conducted a full inspection of the home for further mold. They thankfully found no evidence of mold anywhere else in the house. What did not go according to the plan was the second company I provided them “PuroClean Rhode Island” could not give them a restoration estimate until the second week of January. This large gap of time can increase the likelihood of the mold growing since the basement still hasn’t been completely eradicated of wet spots. In the future, I would gather more resources to contact for the family to restore and remove mold in their basement. I would further recommend or ensure the family sees a pulmonologist regularly to ensure their asthma is being treated appropriately.
