Summary conclusion based on this please The term evidence-based practice is a problem-solving approach to clinical practice that involves current research, clinical experience, and the patient’s preference. Evidence based practice is applying research findings into daily patient care and clinical decision making. It is important in nursing because it is used as a guide for how nurses make accurate, timely, and appropriate clinical decisions. Evidence based practice allows for better patient outcomes. Throughout the years, evidence-based practice has significantly improved outcomes in patient safety. Improved healing and shorter recovery times are also other improvements in patients’ outcomes because of evidence based practice. Evidence based practice will continue to expand as new research is developed. Health care workers will make decisions based on what we know today, not what has always been done. Using evidence-based practice is a huge step in improving patient care. Providing safe, high-quality care requires using pertinent evidence upon establishing a foundation for practice. Many Evidence-Based practice interventions are preventative, meaning when the nurse uses these practices, it aims to prevent complications. An example of Evidence-Based Practice in nursing is how the effect of care towards patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases has evolved throughout the years. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the leading cause of respiratory failure with high morbidity and mortality rates. Nurses play a vital role in ensuring effective, safe and person-centered care in COPD, and it is important to develop effective care as the years go by. Qualitative research Patients with COPD often use the treatment of oxygen. In this paragraph it will be explaining the qualitative research on oxygen use with patients with COPD. Qualitative research is the collection and analyzation of non-numerical data to improve understanding, opinions and experiences of a topic. In a research article on the qualitative study on high flow nasal cannula use in COPD patients it focuses on the experiences that patients had with using the high flow nasal cannula for a long term treatment. In the article the patients described that they had “perceived lower work of breathing, improved quality of sleep, increased activity of daily living, reduced COPD symptoms, feeling safe and technology use” (Storgaard et al., 2020). Patients expressed to being more relaxed by not having to focus on breathing, this resulted in the improved quality of sleep. “Another factor that improved the patients sleep was having less interruptions during the night. This might be due to less airway dryness, because of the humidification and the perception of a calmer and easier breathing”(Storgaard et al., 2020). The high flow oxygen use reduced the amount of dryness in the airways because it isn’t used with humidification similar to the other oxygen therapies that can be used. There are also some disadvantages with the use of long term oxygen. “However, users recognise that there are also disadvantages, including physical and psychosocial barriers, as they become attached to the device and isolate themselves, and emotional challenges, such as fear and anguish about living in need of the machine. Furthermore, the treatment can be challenging” (Bueno et al., 2022). Even though most research shows promising results of long term oxygen there is always a downside as well, many people feel embarrassed or feel they have a burden because they have to carry the machine around. Overall, out of the studies it is presented that the positives outweigh the disadvantages and the high flow nasal cannula has some outstanding data to support that this would be an effective long term use in COPD patients.
