The Affordable Care Act was passed in 2010 under the presidency of Barack Obama in an attempt of health reform. The three goals of the Affordable Care Act are for health care to be more affordable so that everyone has access to health insurance and health care, for all states to expand their Medicaid program to provide more coverage, and to lower the costs of healthcare (Assistant Secretary for public Affairs, 2022). There are a few principal elements of the Affordable Care Act in relation to community and public health. First, an increase in funding towards research, training, and education for health care professionals will increase community access to health care and increase the quality of evidenced based practice by addressing staffing shortages and education. This increase in funding includes an array of health care professionals such as doctors and nurses as well as multiple specialties of health care. Second, the addition of community health centers and community health teams to provide generalized health care services to local communities will help address those specifically suffering from health inequity resulting from barriers to health care such as health disparities or social determinants of health. Providing home care services to those who are chronically ill can improve one’s quality of life. Next, requiring insurance plans to provide coverage for essential health care services can ensure everyone has equal access to vital services that can maintain and improve health. Nurses’ responsibilities involve continuing their education to help assist in improving health care and being educated on health disparities and how to reach certain communities to promote health. Nurses could join organizations to help develop and define guidelines to implement these laws to advocate for the public as it pertains to health care (American Nurses Association, 2014).
