BSCN 1101 – Introduction to the Nursing Profession: Relational Inquiry – Fall 2022 Group Project Looking at the Bigger Picture: Presentation and Personal Self-Reflection Overall Assignment Description The group project is a course-culminating assignment where students can demonstrate the skills and knowledge they have learned throughout the semester. This assignment is designed to encourage you and your group to think critically and to further develop the skills needed to use a relational inquiry approach in your nursing practice. The focus of this assignment is not to create strategies to solve problems, but rather to develop your skills of relational orientation and inquiry in order to recognize the bigger picture. Identify, describe, and analyze the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and contextual factors that influence a client’s health. You will also analyze your own (individual) development of relational inquiry skills and personal strategies for building self-compassion. Students will be provided with a client scenario to frame their work for this assignment. Assignment Components and Guidelines Part 1: Group Presentation (30%) The purpose of the group presentation is to identify, describe and analyze health inequities and how they affect your assigned client’s health and well-being. The group is expected to provide a description of the influences (i.e., intrapersonal, interpersonal, and contextual factors) on their assigned client and support this work with evidence. Students will also describe the connections between the social determinants of health and the client’s health using hermeneutic and critical lenses. Finally, students will provide examples of supportive nursing care using relational inquiry. In order to facilitate learning for all class members, the group presentation must incorporate strategies to engage the class in a dynamic way. Examples of class engagement strategies include interactive case studies, role play with debriefing, polls, etc. Each group will be assigned a client: A new immigrant from Mozambique with limited English living in Etobicoke Groups will use the following steps to guide their inquiry and to provide a framework for the group presentation: 1) Using the inquiry skills (multiple modes of inquiry) you have developed over the semester, identify some of the contexts that are most relevant to your client. Consider the historical, physical, political, economic, social, and linguistic environments that influence your client’s health. 2) Examine the underlying assumptions using the hermeneutic phenomenological (HP) and critical lenses to expand your view and sharpen your focus. What do you see when you use a hermeneutic phenomenological (HP) lens? What do you see when you use a critical lens? 3) Describe and provide possible examples of the connections between the social determinants of health (i.e., education, occupation, social class, social support, gender, racism, poverty) and your client’s health and access to healthcare. 4) Describe the inequities (i.e., differences that are unfair, modifiable, and arise from unjust systemic social arrangements) that affect your client’s health and well-being. 5) Using a socio-environmental perspective of health, give examples of how a nursing standpoint can support your client’s choices and capacities to live meaningful lives within their particular personal and social contexts. *Inquiry framework adapted from Doane and Varcoe (2021) SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE NURSING NURSING BSCN-1101
