The cardiovascular system and the respiratory system
The cardiovascular system and the respiratory system work hand in hand to ensure that the veins can carry deoxygenated blood and wastes back to the heart and subsequently to the lungs to undergo gas exchange (external respiration). This process further allows oxygenated blood to leave the lungs, travel through the left side of the heart and out the left ventricle and aorta to the body systemically. These systems work so closely together that when the heart begins to fail, the lungs begin to bear the consequences and vice versa. After fully completing the textbook readings and learning modules, Cardiovascular and Lymphatic Systems and Respiratory System: Think about what you learned this week. We learned about body system physiology, the intended order of these body systems, their definitions, and overall functions. In addition, we learned about some of the conditions that occur when these body systems are not functioning properly. On a more basic level, how can we understand these complex body systems and conditions by breaking their words down into their primary components? What do some of these cardiovascular and respiratory words mean at the most basic level when we break them down? As an example, I can learn an incredible amount of information and understand the following scenario below by the breakdown of these complex words: Example scenario: Jane has cardiomyopathy, in which the etiology is myocarditis from an associated virus. Let’s break it down to see what we can learn. cardi/o: heart myo: muscle pathy: suffering or disease ——————————————————————————— Cardiomyopathy: Any disease of the heart muscle myo: muscle cardi/o: heart itis: inflammation ——————————————————————————— Myocarditis: Inflammation of the heart muscle etiology: the cause, set of causes or manner of causation of disease ——————————————————————————————————————————————— *Most common cause of myocarditis and subsequently cardiomyopathy is viral infection. Utilizing the same method above, create a scenario (like the example listed) in which a patient is experiencing an issue within the cardiovascular or respiratory body system. Follow through as outlined by breaking down the complex words in your scenario to further explain what is occurring. Within your process, describe how very complex medical information can be more easily explained by breaking down the terms further. SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE NURSING MATH AHS1001 S
