The cause of illness is thought to be cause by internal imbalances and as a result of ignoring sacred, natural laws. Traditional Indigenous Healing is a holistic approach that aims to treat imbalances of a person’s body, mind, emotions and spirit collectively. These four aspects of wellness are represented in the image of the medicine wheel (Centre, 2022, Slide 7). Traditional shamans, herbalists, and healers worked using holistic methods to heal people and research shows that Indigenous people were generally healthy prior to colonialism with diseases being minimal (Astle et al., 2019). Land has a significant meaning and importance to Indigenous people as they believe the land is connected to well-being and that our bodies, in turn are connected to the land. Since the land has blessed them with great gifts it is their responsibility to care for, protect and always find their way back to the land (Bray et al., 2019). Aboriginal healing practices include sweat ceremonies which are performed in sweat lodges and use heat and steam to cleanse toxins from the body, mind, and spirit (Coholic et al., 2015). Smudging is another ritual that involves burning sacred herbs in a small bowl and is used to purify people and places (Coholic et al., 2015). The use of ceremonial drums and songs are a way to connect with the creator and spirit (Coholic et al., 2015). Although there are still ways to go, western medicine is creating a space for Indigenous healing practices by providing culturally competent care that meets the needs of the patient. Some health centers have created smudging rooms, sweat lodges and dedicated healing spaces as a way to promote recovery, health and well-being (Centre, 2022, Slide 24).
