The patient’s ability to communicate in English is very basic. She was diagnosed with acute cholecystitis and admitted to the medical-surgical floor of a metropolitan academic medical center. Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, her son was not allowed into the emergency department or on the medical-surgical floor. The patient is in pain, anxious, and does not comprehend what the surgeon is attempting to communicate. The surgeon needs to move quickly to secure an operating room and remove the gall bladder that evening. The surgeon is pressing the patient to consent and does not want to wait for an interpreter. The patient’s assigned registered nurse (RN) has 5 years of experience on the medical surgical unit.
