The profession of social work/social service work often involves working one-on-one with clients, but it is also concerned with broader social issues such as poverty, unemployment and homelessness. Human rights and social justice are the philosophical underpinnings of social work/social service work practice. Commitment to social change and social justice is fundamental to our core values. The profession works with those who are disadvantaged and or excluded from society. We look at how we can eliminate barriers, inequities and injustices from a macro perspective looking at how “systems” disadvantage our clients. Reducing inequality of opportunity and seeking ways to redress social imbalances will reduce the need for social welfare services. It is important for social workers and social service workers to identify social justice, environmental and political movements and discuss how these movements challenge patterns of oppression. There are many ways we can accomplish this. The nature of this assignment is for the student to investigate and research a social justice activity. Please ensure your research is in a CANADIAN context. Normally, the students would be asked to participate in an actual event in our community. However, at this time, students will be asked to simulate this experience by doing some research online on their chosen issue.
