Analyse the leadership and care decisions this registered nurse had to consider for this patient to ensure safe patient care by considering the following questions: (LO 1-4) Explore and examine one leadership theory/style, how did this nurse leader put certain characteristics of this leadership style into action with the complex patient. Choose a leadership style (Authoritarian, democratic, transactional, laissez -faire, situational, bureaucratic, affiliative, coaching, reactive and adaptive) Apply this to the registered nurse ie practice assessor/practice assessor/or a staff nurse that is leading the care for your identified patient. In other words demonstrate how this nurse executed this leadership style. only discuss one leadership style. Ask how you would the leadership style in practice? – what has it got to do with care? (In other words what does it look like and how does it work!) How did the nurse put this into action with this complex care patient. What was the influence of this nurse’s leadership style in managing and coordinating complex care? For example did it work – did people feel empowered (or motivated, were mistakes minimised and so on) Discuss the following: Quality of care (mobilising resources to meet the needs of this complex patient) Patient safety Is the nurse being a good role model for others In other words, did this leadership style do what it’s supposed to do which is – keep people safe, provide autonomy for the nurse in making decisions, and provide a policy boundary in terms of what we can and can’t do? How did the nurse prioritise, delegate and negotiate the coordination of care of the patient? Think about these traits in terms of delegation, negotiation and prioritisation. For example we know that if the registered nurse had adopted a democratic leadership style they will not be delegating, prioritising and may increase the risk to the patient. With Servant leadership style the nurses often use servant leadership where they act on the instruction of other professions without challenging them. Identify the social, political and economical as the significant factors that the nurse had to consider when co-ordinating care around safety for your patient.
