Third Discussion Question – What does it mean for a
Main Post: Contribution of Informatics Competencies to Healthcare Outcomes Competency-based education is a type of learning that holds students accountable to master the competencies critical for their area of study (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2021). This educational framework prioritizes the outcomes of the learning process over the inputs (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2021). Competencies encourage regular self-reflection and assessment of progress toward the outlined goals (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2021). As technology advances in society and healthcare, it is clear that all healthcare professionals, nurses especially, must maintain specific competencies to keep up. Proficiency in informatics competencies not only allows nurses to streamline documentation, improve data exchange, and focus on patient outcomes, but also fosters a sense of adaptability and open-mindedness in the face of technological change (Collins et al., 2017). Essential Informatics Competencies One essential informatics competency that every nurse should possess is the American Nurses Association Standard 4: Planning (2015). Developing strategies to address identified problems is a crucial skill that nurses apply clinically and can easily be extended to informatics. Nurses are also accustomed to considering the clinical, financial, social, and economic impact of implemented plans on stakeholders and integrating current rules and standards within the planning process to modify ongoing assessments, which is standard in nursing practice (American Nurses Association, 2015). Another essential informatics competency that every nurse should possess is the American Nurses Association Standard 5: Implementation (2015). Executing devised plans is another area directly pertinent to standard nursing procedures. Proficiency in utilizing electronic health records to measure, document, and retrieve data to bolster evidence-based interventions for achieving predefined outcomes should be a fundamental skill for all nurses (American Nurses Association, 2015). A final informatics competency that every nurse should possess is the American Nurses Association Standard 6: Evaluation (2015). This standard encourages collaboration with the healthcare team to systematically evaluate the outcomes, a task all nurses can easily perform. Improvements in Healthcare Outcomes from Competencies These competencies impact improvements in healthcare outcomes in my organization by enhancing patient care quality, streamlining processes, increasing efficiency, and ultimately leading to better overall health outcomes for our patients. Emphasizing the mastery of key skills like informatics equips nurses to adapt to technological advancements, improve documentation accuracy, facilitate data exchange, and prioritize patient-centered care, resulting in a more effective and patient-centric healthcare delivery system.
