Was the likelihood of publication bias assessed? the PubMed and PsycINFO databases were searched and cross-referenced with the following search terms on October 9, 2017: HPV, human papillomavirus, adolescent, teenager, teen, young adult, males, boys, men, cancer, Gardasil, prevention, vaccine, and vaccination. With the help of a research librarian, search terms were inputted into each database and results were saved for review of study inclusion/exclusion. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they met the following criteria: (1) examined male adolescents/young adults (AYA males were identified as being between 15 and 29 years of age), (2) reported male adolescents/young adults’, their parents’, and/or their providers’ perceptions of barriers to the HPV vaccine and/or HPV risk, (3) were published between February 2010, when the U.S. Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved Gardasil for AYA males, and October 2017, and (4) were conducted within the US. Studies that did not allow for examination of male-specific results, separate from female results, and studies not written in or translated into English were excluded from the review.
