What did you learn from watching the videos of the selected project. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcC9YSTa8B8 — Communication Breakdown in Healthcare https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jmULQ_m04o — Medication error in the hospital kills two-year old Emily Jerry https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqnXVFwPyyM — What nurses can teach us What was the impact on you from the essay of the selected project: Each video gives a good example of the vulnerabilities in healthcare. When we chose the nursing profession, we wanted to make a positive impact in the lives of others, but many of us did not think about the possibility of hurting someone unintentionally. We must be mindful of the positive and negative possibilities. When we look at videos such as “Medication Error in the Hospital Kills Two-Year Old Emily Jerry”, it is heart-wrenching to see how a little girl overcame cancer and ended up dying from a medication error in her final treatment that was meant to give additional preventative measures against the cancer returning (Patient Safety Movement, 2022). We must ask questions if we are unsure. We must put the safety of our patients above our ego. The second video “Communication Breakdown in Healthcare” shows how one person can dictate a situation even when other people are telling them that they are wrong. In this story, the physician proceeded with a surgery on the wrong side, even after he was told it was the wrong side, without verifying the information prior to surgery (Crucial Learning, 2022). This is a reckless situation that could have easily been avoided. Nurses must stand up and fight for our patients in times like these. The third video “What Nurses Can Teach Us” is an inspiring story about how she experienced compassion fatigue and how she got through it (Watson, 2022). We must remember that compassion is the core of nursing care and we must find a way to give ourselves the self-care we need to rejuvenate in order to provide the compassionate care for our patients. Sometimes nurses are working so hard caring for others that we neglect ourselves. Self-care is essential for nurses. It is also necessary to identify nurses that are struggling and give them the support they need to help them get through it. SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE NURSING NURS 3322
