You are a nurse in a busy

You are a nurse in a busy trauma unit in a large metropolitan hospital. In recent years, “business” has increased markedly. Multiple gunshot wound victims nightly (5-7 clients). More on the weekends. On average 1-2 deaths per night; double that on a busy weekend shift. Although the nursing staff is used to this level of activity, everyone is stressed. Against that background, consider this situation. A colleague, Jane (the nurse who mentored you when you arrived on the unit) seems different lately. Still sharp as a tack, but a little more distant. Breaks and lunches seem to last longer than before. You can’t put your finger on it. One day, you notice Jane hung a new bag of narcotics for one of your clients. According to the MAR, that bag should not have been due for replacement for 8 more hours. And, when Jane relieves you for lunch, you notice on returning, most of your clients have received PRN narcotics. Speaking with coworkers, you learn some of them have been having the same experiences. Laughing it off, you nervously joke that Jane prefers her patients “well medicated.” You think there might be more to it. You suspect Jane has developed a substance abuse problem and that she may be diverting drugs at work. Just as in many of your exams, the is, “What will the nurse do next?” The nurse is you! This scenario presents a serious situation. The consequences for Jane can be great, legally, and professionally. How will the nurse (you) handle this situation which is fraught with moral, legal, and ethical issues. SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE NURSING NUR 207
