1. You are the director in a very busy ER. The novice nurse you have put in for vacation for Christmas when she was hired onto the unit. The more veteran nurse on your unit just put in vacation time for Christmas. To accommodate your unit, one of these nurses must work. The more veteran nurse is threatening she is close to retirement and will just quit if she cant get it off to be with her grandchildren. However, she is the charge nurse that works overtime, if you loose her your ER will drastically change. The novice nurse is crying as she planned a very expensive vacation and now the entire ER staff has bullied her for having the time off, when the veteran charge nurse cant.​

2. You are a charge nurse on a PCU unit. It is the holidays and normal schedules are mixed due to the holiday rotations. Upon arriving to work you learn two of your four nurses do not get along. Apparently, they have a personal past. Due to this, they normally work opposite shifts and accidentally was placed on the same shift today (oversight of the scheduling manager). When they arrived on your unit they immediately started to argue and causing a disruption. There was a code prior to shift change and your patient’s family is attempting to morn.

3. While working in as a charge nurse in an ER, you have two MVA patients transported in. You know one patient was life flighted out to a different location. When the ambulances arrive, you learn one patient is a drunk driver, who hit a man (your other patient), and his son (the patient life flighted). The drunk driver is unapologetic and stating he did not wrong. The police have not yet arrived. The father is incredibly angry and stating he is going to handle the guy that hit him, he is unaware of the patient currently being intoxicated. The only beds you have available are hallway beds facing each other. ​

4. You’re working on a medical surgical unit. One of the committees on the unit just updated a policy on safe practices for post-surgical patients. The policy was reviewed by various surgeons and approved. After being implemented, a newer surgeon to the hospital constantly does not follow the policy. Various charge nurses have reviewed the policy with the surgeon who states he doesn’t feel like doing the extra work. It is now impeding patient care. He has also started to have aggression with the nurses. You have brought this up with the head of surgery who brushed you off. Your staff is threatening to quit due to a hostile work environment and unsafe practices.​

5. You are the manager on a medical surgical unit. Your unit has been struggling since April of 2020. It is constantly low staffing and having travel nurses which brings morale down. Recently another wave of nurses left the unit. Therefore, travel nurses where brought in. The travel nurses are making $100/ hour, while your staffing it only making $30/hr. One day you arrive on the unit and see your charge nurse upset. Upon questioning the charge nurse you learn the travel nurse refused to take more than 5 patients, since it is in her contract to only take 5. Additionally, the charge nurse is furious that the travel nurse is making $70 more than her and taking the same amount of patient’s, while she still has charge duties. She is also complaining that she has to work weekends, while many travelers have in their contract to not work the weekend. She is demanding to have weekends off to mitigate her frustration. She reports she is loyal to the hospital but already has travel agencies she can go to and make over $100 an hour. She reports if she does not get weekends off for her to rest she will leave. This charge nurse is critical to your unit, however, it is mandatory for all charge nurses to work two weekends a month, especially when you only have two charge nurses and one float PRN that can only work 1 weekend day a month.​
