A project to help patients “Get Fit For Surgery”

What was the identified research tradition? If this was not clearly identified, what tradition was most closely in line with this study?  The methods used in this study were consistent with a constant comparison approach, which is an element of the Grounded Theory.  “Grounded Theory researchers seek to understand actions by focusing on the main concern or problem that the individual’s behavior is designed to address” (Polit & Beck, 2021 p. 481). “All transcripts were read and reread to identify the major themes before open coding” (McLaughlin et al., 2021 p.4 ).
Was the research design appropriate for the question being asked? The Grounded Theory fits this study well, as this study is promoting changing behaviors such as smoking cessation and weight loss, and the grounded theory focuses on understanding the main problems or behaviors.
Was the data collection processes appropriate?  “The study was approved by the North West/Liverpool East NHS Research Ethics Committee (19/NW/0353) and the Health Research Authority (IRAS ID 258508) and sponsored by the University of Bristol.  Written informed consent was received for all participants” (McLaughlin et al., 2021 p. 9).  Interviews were conducted either face-to-face at a community hospital, or by telephone.
Was the sample selection procedures clearly described? What about eligibility requirements? The sample selection procedures were clearly described.  Eligibility requirements were limited to patients who had membership to the Health Organizations policy steering group.  The participants all either smoked or were obese with a body mass index of over 30 kg/m2.
Was the sample size appropriate? There was a very small sample, n=20 which isn’t the best. 48 requests were sent out with reminders, but only 20 participated.   It would have been better if there were at least n=30 or greater.
Was the setting and sample support the research question? The study was deemed a success in the end, even though COVID put a bit of a damper on the project.  There is consideration for a wider spread roll out.  There appears to be an element of politics with this study, but despite all of this, it did seem to support the research question.
Was saturation addressed? Polit & Beck describe saturation as “The collection of qualitative data to the point where a sense of closure is attained because new data yield redundant information” (Polit & Beck, 2021 p.802). McLaughlin et al., 2021 p. 4 state that the differences in “interpretation were discussed until agreement was reached”.  Is that saturation?  I don’t feel like it is, because the consensus was met by discussion, interpretation and persuasion, rather than repetitive same results.
Look at the question and the sample of participants, did the researcher use the best method of capturing what they intended to discover? I feel like there may have been some bias in the selection of the patients- leaning towards the study.  Those who participated in the Get Fit For Surgery program, were all members of the HO, and were professionals.  It seems like their interest may have been skewed pro the program, whereas if the participant selection had been completely random, the results may be different.
How were data recorded? Audio recording of either face-to-face interviews or telephone calls is how the data was recorded.
