Purpose:

The purpose of this assignment is to provide students with an opportunity to explore and to critically examine the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses (2001) as it applies to professional practice in contemporary health care. Process:

A.  You will need to research a case study using the library resources explained in the PowerPoint below or other resources available to you. This needs to be a documented case in which an ethical issue was violated or in question by the courts such as the Cruzan case NOT a topic of discussion.

B. The paper should address the relevance of the Code of Ethics for Nurses, including the following:

Describe the purpose of the Code of Ethics for Nurses.
Summarize key data of the case study being examined, including factual information, ethical issues (moral agent(s), ethical principles, potential or actual ethical conflict(s), and relevant contextual issues (legal, cultural, political, religious).
Identify the decision you would make in this case and include your reasoning for making this choice.
Discussion of the relevant applicable provisions of the Code of Ethics for Nurses to the selected case. Include interpretive statements for each provision that you believe are appropriate to the case and discuss why these provision(s) apply and would support the ethical decision you would make in this case.
Conclusion addressing how you see yourself using the Code of Ethics for Nurses in your future practice as a professional nurse.

C.  Your case study must be copied and pasted into the paper at the bottom. papers should also include references and materials from the recent academic and scholarly literature. A minimum of five references from professional sources must be listed. Note: information from newspapers, popular magazines, and Wikipedia ARE NOT academic references.
