Adolescent pregnancies can alter the internal structure of families and their lives, this also poses increased risks and liabilities to the community as a whole. Young, pregnant women between the ages of 13-20 are considered adolescent pregnanies. These pregnancies pose high health risks for both mother and baby, including increased risk of fatalities. According to Chung (2018), the identified risk factors associated with adolescent pregnancies are early marriage, sexual risk behaviors, substance use, family experience of adolescent birth, peer pressure, and lack of sex education and health service. The Arizona’s Children Association is a comprehensive child welfare and behavioral health not-for-profit agency in Arizona that connects young parents with resources available to them. A national resource that awards more than 200 grants throughout the United States to increase access and capacity of youth-serving organizations that prompt sexual risk avoidance and personal responsibility education is the Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB) Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (APP) Program. Making Action Possible in Southern Arizona, cited that Arizona teen births have declined by 64.4% since 2006 as compared to recent statistics in 2020 at 22.3 births per 1,000 females aged 15-19 years old. The Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program reports this decreasing trend of adolescent pregnancies is correlated with use of more evidence-based programs and interventions, increased access to more effective methods of contraception, including long-acting reversible contraceptives, and promotion of more comprehensive, holistic approaches to improve teens’ health and well-being.
