As a nurse, the next priority need caring for my patients is;
Â
Being Nurses, oxygenation is the most important aspect
we have to take into consideration when caring for our clients. The next in my
priority is fluid balance. Fluid balance is still under the physiological needs
next to oxygenation in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

A change in health affects the way basic needs are provided as
follows
Â
Regulating the body’s fluid balance is a primary health and
disease issue, which incorporates two concepts. The first concept is the
relationship between total body water and total effective solvent and is
expressed in terms of body fluid tonicity. Tonicity disorders are the key
factor responsible for changes in cell volume which can have a significant
effect on the function and survival of brain cells. Solutes distributed almost
exclusively in the extracellular compartment, primarily sodium salts, and in
the intracellular compartment, primarily potassium salts, contribute to
tonicity. The second concept for body fluid equilibrium relates to controlling
and calculating sodium salt levels and extracellular volume anomalies.
Extracellular volume estimations are more nuanced and vulnerable to error than
TBW calculations.
Â
Â
Actions that a nurse could take to assist a client with health
changes are as follows
Â
Nurses administer intravenous fluids to regulate the patient’s
fluid balance. There are two types of fluid crystalloid and colloid type.
Nurses know the difference between each type and when and how to administer it.
The patient’s outcome depends on the type of fluid and the amount.
