Otitis Externa Prescribing Activity
Patient: Amy Watson Gender: Female Address: 2145 W. 19th St., Tyler, 79755
DOB: 4/2/2018 Allergies: PCN Wt.: 42 lbs. Ht.: 39 inches
You are the Nurse Practitioner in a local walk-in clinic and you enter the room to see a young 4-year-old female patient with her mother. The mother explains that the patient has been complaining of her right ear hurting for the past 2 days and she started noticing this morning that there was some yellow drainage from the ear. The mother states that the daughter will not let her touch the ear because it hurts to move her ear. Little Amy lets you take a quick look and you quickly diagnose her with Acute Otitis Externa of the right ear. The tympanic membrane is intact but the ear canal is very swollen, yellowish, and wet.
As you question the mother about past ear infections she tells you that the child had this same type of infection last summer and when they tried to use OTC acetic acid and alcohol, it did not help the infection resolve and they had to get antibiotic drops which made the infection last longer and she would like to request a topical antibiotic ear drop this visit so it does not take so long to treat the infection. She cannot remember the name of the one from last year, so you decide to review the normal antibiotic ear drops used for acute otitis externa and will now write her a prescription for these drops.
2. What is the Rx for the patient’s ear drops using the first line of ear drops
Remember you will need to choose the number of days needed for this prescription and if there need to be any refills.
