Grief is the inevitable process that we go through whenever we are faced with a loss or another emotionally challenging situation. Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross identified five stages of grief that can occur in the dying patient. Refer to Unit 32 of your textbook for a complete explanation of these stages. Remember, everyone doesn’t move through the stages at the same pace or in the same order.
Think back to a time in your life when you or a friend experienced a great loss or another emotionally challenging situation. Maybe it was the death of a loved one or a pet. Perhaps you supported a friend who had lost a loved one or who was dying himself. Maybe you received bad news of another kind, lost a job, went through a divorce or watched a friend or loved one go through a divorce, etc.
Relate your experience or the experience of a friend to the 5 psychological stages of grief explained in your textbook. Identify the specific actions or statements that each of these stages of grief produced in the situation. Be sure to relate them to the specific stages that they would fall into.
