Ernie is an Aboriginal client. Ernie is suffering from cancer of the lung after a lifetime of smoking and poor diet. He is not 
expected to live more than one or two months. He comes from a rural community, where he has been living, until he 
became ill while visiting his cousins in the city. He would have preferred to have returned home, but his cousins wanted 
him to stay, as all his close family members are now living in the urban area. 
Ernie sleeps on the floor in the neighbouring abandoned shops, beside your employer’s building. Despite requests from 
a member of the DHS to ask for help and housing. He prefers to be outside. Other staff members worry about the cold 
weather and Ernie. They always make sure they give him any food left over from home, and sometimes buy him things 
for lunch when they are on their breaks. 
The staff overheard the Support group offering to help take him to a warm shower, to which Ernie declined. He is 
starting to look and smell quiet offensive, ‘…we often wonder due to his cultural background has he ever showered?’ 
Ernie does not look directly at any of the staff when you take him food and drink and often does not reply to questions. 
Some staff members find this offensive and find it hard to take him food and drinks. He eats very little food except what 
has been brought to him on occasion. Everyone tries to be kind but find communication almost impossible.
