1. The new Australian occupational therapy competency standards (the competency standards) have been in effect since 1 January 2019. The Occupational Therapy Board of Australia (the Board) expects all occupational therapists to understand the apply them in their practice.  The competency standards outline professional behaviours all occupational therapists should demonstrate to practise safely and ethically.

Provide a brief description of each of the following Competency standards.

a) Discuss what impact this condition may have on Anna and her family and the changes that need to be made.

Anna has severe weakness in her arms. Anna is experiencing difficulty with using cutleries to eat her meals and is requiring assistance to transfer into the chair. Anna is on medications and participates in rehabilitation. You are working as an Allied Health Assistant with Anna’s daily program. Anna is resistive to attend the gym for her rehabilitation.

b) What responses to her major life trauma is Anna experiencing?

c) Recognising that Anna needs to adjust with her new condition, how could you as an Allied Health Assistant help Anna in this situation?

You have been asked to assist with Anna’s rehabilitation program for meal preparation. The goal is to independently and safely make a light snack. Their impairments include moderate weakness in their left upper limb, reduced standing balance and difficulties with memory.
