Play activities are an essential part of every child’s life and it is widely recognized that play contributes significantly to a child’s development. Play activities must be age-appropriate as well as ability-appropriate. Special needs children may require adaptations in recreational activity planning to best meet their individual needs and ability to participate. Part 1 This assignment will be done in groups of 2 or 3. Begin by signing up for the topic of your choice. To sign up for a topic go to the drop-down menu ‘Management’, then click on ‘Groups’. Choose a topic from the list and have your entire group sign up under the same topic. Your group will research the condition and design an age-appropriate recreational program/fun activity for a child with special needs. Each group can choose the setting (ie. school, home, etc) where the interaction with the child will occur. Effective communication techniques specific to the child’s condition should be included in the presentation. Your assignment should include: Effective communication techniques specific to your client. Age and condition appropriate safety precautions. Your group can choose whatever media they wish to present in (Power Point, Video, written paper are some suggestions) be creative! The final presentation must be uploaded to the media library in the drop box by the due date. This part of the assignment is worth 30 % of your final mark. A grading form is provided under Assessments > Rubrics to show how the presentation will be evaluated. Don’t forget to look at it. Part 2 Submit a peer review of all of the assignments (except yours). The review should be based on the following criteria: 1. Creativity: Was there good use of colour and pictures to keep your interest? 2. Information: Did you learn something new about the condition? 3. Activity: Was the activity interesting and age and skill appropriate?
