Types of Communication; Section 3. Barriers to Communication) Chapter 4, pg 57-58 (hearing and vision deficits). Below are some things that you should mention in your paper: How did you get them to “open up” and talk with you? Did you use any open or direct questions? Did you have to paraphrase/clarify your questions? How did you make sure that you understood the person correctly? Were there any communication problems and how did you work around those? (example: hearing, vision and speech impaired) Body language, eye contact, how did you position yourself so the person could talk and listen in a relaxed manner? (If done in person) Below are just suggestions for questions to get you started in a conversation. Have you always lived here in New Mexico? What other cities? Have you been to other countries? Did you move often? Where was your favorite place? Did you serve in the military? Would you tell me a little about that? (please thank them for their service) Do you have pets? What kind are they? What are their names? Do you have children/grandchildren? Where do they all live? What are your favorite sports teams? You have seen a lot of changes in your lifetime. What change is the most remarkable? What do you think is the best invention/advancement that you have seen over your lifetime? What advice would you give me as I begin my work in health care?
