In this Ted Talk, Jan Denecker discusses

In this Ted Talk, Jan Denecker discusses the logistical issues of how the medical world continues to advance but how our resource availability stays the same. He points out that the U.S. and European Union have spent over 4 trillion dollars on healthcare per year and how the cost is not correlating with healthcare improvements. Denecker calls for society to do “more with less” and provides 3 ways we can start implementing this. His 3 tips are to: 1. Look for alternatives 2. Keep it simple 3. Look right under our noses. He provides examples such as India surgeons using binder clips instead of scalp clips and honey instead of iodine for skin injuries. There was also an infant incubator created in India that costs 70% less than the typical incubator in the U.S. He also mentioned using barcodes in hospitals like we do in the everyday consumer world. Cost-efficient technology like this has proven to be effective and more cost efficient. It could save English hospitals 1.3 billion by using barcodes. How does utilitarian ethics play a role in more cost efficient hospital tools? Does using technology that seems less medical grade raise any concern? Do you think you would feel as safe with cheaper medical equipment? Or does it matter to you? How could this affect the cost of healthcare nationwide? https://www.ted.com/talks/jan_denecker_how_to_do_more_with_less_in_healthcare
