A 21-year-old male, who is status post open fracture of left femur secondary to an accidental gunshot wound, is admitted with intractable pain in the left hip. The patient’s injury occurred approximately 18 months ago, and he had previously undergone open reduction and internal fixation of his femoral neck fracture. Radiologic imaging demonstrated ballistic fragments within the acetabulum and femoral neck. In his diagnostic statement, the provider listed, “Traumatic arthritis of hip secondary to femur fracture.” Is the traumatic arthritis considered a late effect of the gunshot injury? How should this be coded?
