Anxious Parent Pre-Sim Discussion My reading, observations, and research indicate that students become anxious when they go to clinical or go to simulation, especially the first few times. Rather than considering what they are worried about for the patient, students tend to be more worried about themselves and what others are thinking/saying about them. Over time there is generally a transference when the worry about self transfers to worry about the patient. This comes with deliberate practice of communication, clinical judgement, and physical skills, but it is pretty normal to have the “all about me” worry in the beginning. With this in mind, what are you most worried about as you prepare to talk with the anxious family member? What are some tools which can reduce anxiety and what cues will tell you that the anxious family member is ready and able to listen? Please let us know your thoughts and reply to one other classmate with a tip or technique to help them with coping.
