As a manager, we often are chosen

As a manager, we often are chosen for the role because of demonstrating leadership skills and/or mastery of understanding the work environment. For example, as a new nurse, one can help their crew at times to deal with difficult patient situations and survive the night shift. This is often done on a regular basis. Other members of my team would say, “Someday, you will be running this hospital.” Often this is how we enter management roles. However, does this qualify us to become mangers? How do managers become educated and oriented to their roles? What have you seen or experienced? Is this consistent with the literature? Please provide the references used, thank you.
