At the age of 24, Alec Smith was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (Rappold, 2018). At the time, the cost of insulin and other supplies was $250 per month. When he was 26 years old, he was no longer eligible for his mother’s health insurance. he was not able to find a reasonably priced insurance plan, so he decided to try to pay for his insulin out of pocket. When Alex went to the pharmacy, he found that the cost of his insulin had risen to $1300 for a months’ supply. Alec left the pharmacy without his insulin.
